Fractional Chief AI Officer

Senior AI leadership for small businesses and nonprofits, on a part-time basis. Strategy, governance, and security for AI in your organization, without a full-time hire.

AI is already in your business. Who owns it?

AI is arriving whether you planned for it or not. Your team is trying new tools, your software vendors are switching on AI features, and AI agents can now act on your behalf. Most small organizations have no one whose job it is to decide what is allowed, keep the business secure, and make sure AI actually pays off.

Large companies hire a Chief AI Officer for this. A fractional CAIO gives you the same leadership for a set number of hours each month.

Who this is for

  • Businesses and nonprofits with roughly 10 to 150 people
  • Organizations where AI is showing up in daily work, formally or informally
  • Leaders who want AI's value without taking on unmanaged risk
  • Teams without the internal bandwidth to own AI as an ongoing responsibility

How it works

  1. Start with an assessment.

A fixed-fee AI Readiness & Risk Assessment over 30 to 45 days. We interview your leadership, survey your staff anonymously, find the AI tools already in use, review what your data exposes, and score your processes for where AI fits. You receive a readiness score, a risk register, an approved-tools list, and a 90/180/365-day roadmap that starts with quick wins.

The assessment is priced up front and scaled to the size of your organization. It also shows which needs to address first, so the work that follows goes where it matters most.

If you continue with an annual engagement within 30 days of your assessment readout, the assessment fee is credited toward your first three months.

Already an ezNet Solutions client? You receive a free AI Exposure Snapshot and preferred pricing on the assessment. Just mention it when you reach out.

  2. Continue with an annual engagement.

A set number of hours each month on a yearly agreement, sized to your organization. Your fractional CAIO owns your AI program: strategy, policy, tool decisions, training, and regular reporting to leadership.

  3. Build your AI Champions.

We help you select, train, and support internal AI Champions: respected people in each team who help colleagues use AI well and safely, week to week. Larger engagements include the program; for smaller ones it is available as an add-on.

What your fractional CAIO does

AI strategy and roadmap

Identify the few processes where AI changes the economics, decide how far to extend AI in each, and sequence the work.

Governance and risk

An acceptable-use policy, data rules, approved tools, and a plan for when something goes wrong.

Tool selection and spend control

Evaluate AI tools and agents before they touch your data, and cut what isn't earning its keep.

Training and AI Champions

Practical staff training and an internal champion program so good habits spread.

Oversight and reporting

Quarterly reviews of what is running, what it costs, what is working, and what should change.

AI leadership with a security foundation

Most AI advisors come from marketing or software. Your fractional CAIO is a CISSP-certified security professional with an MBA and more than 35 years in enterprise technology, including AT&T, and has run a managed IT and cybersecurity practice for over 25 years. AI questions in small organizations are usually security questions in disguise: who can see what, which apps have access to your email and files, and what happens to your data. We start there.

Implementation work such as Microsoft 365 configuration, Copilot readiness, and security controls can be delivered through our parent company, ezNet Solutions, or through your existing IT provider. The choice is yours.

Our approach

Strategy before tools.

We start from what AI makes possible and work back to the process, not the other way around.

A person stays in the loop.

For every task, we decide how far AI should go and where a person must review the work.

Realism, not hype.

No panic and no hype. Steady progress, close to the leading edge, with honest caveats.

Frequently asked questions

Will you become an officer of my company?

No. We serve the Chief AI Officer function as an independent advisor. Your leadership keeps all decision authority, and legal or regulatory questions go to your counsel.

Do we have to start with the assessment?

Yes. It tells us both what you need, gives you a roadmap you keep either way, and lets us size the engagement correctly.

What happens to unused monthly hours?

We plan each month's work with you, so your hours are used where they matter most.

What if it isn't working?

Engagements are annual. After the first six months, the engagement can be ended with 60 days' notice.

Do we have to use ezNet Solutions for implementation?

No. We will work with your existing IT provider if you have one.

How do you handle our data?

We collect the minimum needed, such as findings, scores, and metadata, not your documents. We put a data processing agreement in place with every client.
